High in the volcanic hills of the Azores, set in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, tea thrives in the islands’ rich, fertile soil. As the only commercially grown tea in Europe, this freshly harvested Azores Pekoe is made exclusively from the second leaf beneath the bud. The leaves are picked between mid-April and June, once they’ve matured just enough to develop their full character.
Azorean Tea Tradition
Tea first arrived in the Azores in the mid‑19th century as a replacement crop when the island’s orange plantations were devastated by blight. The humid, frost‑free climate and volcanic acidity of São Miguel created near‑ideal conditions for Camellia sinensis. Chinese experts were brought in to instruct local farmers, and by the early 20th century, tea became a key agricultural product—many plantations sprang up, though only a few endured through the decades.
Tea From Gorreana’s Historic Plantation
This particular Pekoe comes from the Chá Gorreana plantation, the oldest continuously operating tea estate in Europe (since 1883).Nestled on São Miguel’s lush north slopes, Gorreana spans roughly 32 hectares and produces about 30–40 tonnes of organic black and green tea each year, free from pesticides and herbicides—thanks to its isolated, pest‑resistant microclimate . The estate remains family-run across five generations, carefully blending traditional Chinese cultivation methods with 19th-century machinery, some of which is still in use in the working factory and on display in its on‑site museum
Why is fresh tea better?
The main reason to drink fresh tea is because of how good it tastes, it is simply on another level. Every note of flavour is amplified and turned up to 11, with each sip of tea bursting with flavour. Don't just take our word for it, try it yourself.
Another reason fresh tea is best is that slowly over time the tea leaves lose nutrients, the more time that passes the more nutrients the leaves lose. Just like fresh fruit and vegetables, the sooner you eat them the more nutritious they are, which is why drinking fresh tea is healthier.
